We wanted this building to be simple, durable, and have space underneath for toys. We learned from our son, who paints children’s furniture, that the drawer handles (with which he often climbed out of bed or bumped his legs) were. Besides, this idea was easy to build.

These plans can easily be adapted for any size mattress. It’s designed for a standard twin size of 38 x 75 inches, so measure your mattress before you start building.

I have included the images of the bed plans below into a pdf document for ease of printing and reading.

*Previously, the layout of the boards was asked for each section. Most of the free plans online don’t include measurements, and I’m worried about making a mistake trying to recreate this concept in a project now. Also, my measurements are for a double bed, but if you use a different piece of plywood for the middle support, it can be raised to a queen or even a king.

*Note on size: We built this as two single beds. It can easily be adjusted for a queen or king. However, I didn’t change the plans with the extra dimensions because I won’t feel complete until I build it myself and I don’t need an extra bed. If you change it, let us know how it went in the comments below.

This bed consists of 4 parts: a headboard, legs and two wardrobes for storing baskets. This is one of the easiest and most functional ways to build a simple bed.

We cut all the plywood pieces with a table saw or circular saw and cut the rest with a 2×4 saw.

Since this bed is for a child, we wanted to get rid of any sharp edges. This can be done with a router or rub the edges a little by hand.

The platform storage consists of two shelves. The inner boxes measure 14.5 x 14.5 and thus fit the basket.

For aesthetic purposes, the boxes are covered with tape on the outside. Pre-drill before nailing to prevent splitting the plywood. Let dry overnight.

Pro tip: Wipe off excess glue to minimize wear. We love the big mats that prevent glue from sticking to anything!

Initially, 2x4s and ¾-inch plywood will be used. The panel is flush with the back of the bag so it’s easy to push against the wall. When folded, the legs are above the stand, leaving a gap at the bottom of the head. Even a relatively thin mattress covers this area, and this gap is common in headboards.

The pocket hole screws the bag and leg frame together. Then screw the plywood panels to the frame. The back of the plywood panel should be flush with the frame. The red arrows show where our pocket holes are.

*Note: We added a support plate between the legs (see our garage pic above) because we thought my brother would want a narrower frame at the time. This bracket is optional, but I still recommend it.

Place the bed platforms where needed for construction. For twin sizes, they move back with no space between them. Place the headboard and footboard on either side, behind or screw.

Put the mattress in place and sleep! If desired, rails can be added to both sides to prevent the mattress from moving.

Since the child should outgrow it in a couple of years, we made this bed from pine wood. However, hardwoods such as maple, oak or walnut are durable and long-lasting.

A platform bed is a low-profile bed frame with a sturdy base that keeps the mattress off the floor. What makes a platform bed unique is that it does not require a spring and is often used to create extra storage under the bed.

Yes, my son’s bed has bunk beds, but the bed is quite high. If you want two rows, I would adjust the height of the chicks below.
