What To Do With An Old Laptop – So I have an old laptop that someone gave me for free. There were some overheating issues (fixed with a quick dose of MX-4) and the battery also wouldn’t charge.
I took it apart to fix it overheating, but I broke the power switch when I put it back together.

I took it out of its case and placed the screen on the window, turning on the wireless connection to my desktop. It stayed there for several months.

I took it apart for fun and without much planning, so now it’s in a pile of parts. It works (minus the second dead disk in a short time that I forgot to back up.

I “rescued” a laptop from the trash at work. It looked familiar, and when I pulled it out it was an almost exact duplicate of my personal laptop, an HP dv9640us. Almost everything that can be removed has been removed, except for the battery. I used my spare 120GB hard drive (there are two in this model) and bought a 60GB SSD to boot. I got a WiFi card and bought a refurbished power brick for $22. So for the price of an SSD, AC adapter and (2) caddies for hard drives, I have a spare laptop
I should mention that the reason for the presentation is because there is no video. I wanted to try baking it, but a co-worker said, “Just heat it with a heat gun.”
I have a working laptop. Unlike other “pieces of junk” in my work, this lappy is in as good condition as my personal model… ie, very, very clean.

Also… Thanks for the effort! One more thing, I know what you mean when you say the power button is broken while “running”. My cervix has about 40 screws holding it in place and I have 4 more!

I’m surprised I didn’t break anything. Click to enlarge… The problem is that you need to replace the heat pad with a copper washer so it doesn’t break again.
This is an old thread, you may not get a reply and you may revive an old thread. Consider creating a new topic. With an old computer you can do things you never imagined. The last thing you need to do is throw it away.
Laptops and desktops tend to have longer lifespans than smartphones, with a decade of use being common. But there will come a day when your device no longer meets your needs and you have to decide what to do with it.
What To Do With Old Laptop Desktop Computer
Aside from the obvious options of recycling or donating your old computer, there are several options that can give your old-looking laptop or desktop a second life. From turning it into a second monitor for your new laptop to turning it into a living room hub or computer for the kids, here’s what you can do and how.
Some local governments drop off your old computer at drop-off points or pick it up at your doorstep for recycling.
Most retailers and manufacturers also have their own recycling systems. For example, Currys – a partner – will take your old computer to the store whether you buy something new from them or not. He will even pick you up at your door if you buy something there and deliver it.
Another example is Apple. You can send any manufacturer’s desktops and laptops for recycling at their UK store. Alternatively, you can also trade in an old Mac for an Apple one. Keep in mind that this exchange is for convenience, as you’ll usually get more for an older Mac if you sell it on a site like eBay.
Bringing Life To Old Laptop With Ubuntu
Of course, make sure you back up any data you want to keep, and then wipe your computer properly before handing it over. If your file size is only a few gigabytes, you do not need to back up system files such as programs and system settings, and you have an Internet connection with high upload speed, you can back them up to cloud storage such as Google Drive or Dropbox.
If your data uses tens or hundreds of gigabytes, it’s cheaper and faster to back it up to an external drive. Macs released in the last 15 years have had a simple but easy-to-use backup feature called Time Machine built into macOS, while basic backup features have been built into Windows since Windows XP under various names.
If you have a lot of data and want to preserve every program and system setting, dedicated backup software like Acronis CyberProtect for Windows and Carbon Copy Cloner for macOS are tried and true options.
If your old computer no longer meets your needs but still works, donating to charity is a great way to give it a second life. WeeeCharity and Computer Aid are just two examples of charities that accept donations from individuals and businesses.
What To Do With An Old Macbook Laptop
If your computer is too old to receive security and operating system updates, but it works perfectly, there are alternatives to recycling or donating. You can install Google’s ChromeOS Flex on it and turn it into a cloud-first computer – for yourself or someone else you know as a primary or second computer.
It’s as easy to use as a new Chromebook, making this a particularly attractive option for the computer newbie in your life, but at a lower cost than buying a new device off the shelf.
While installing a brand new operating system on your old computer sounds daunting, Google has instructions and a list of dozens of popular models that are proven to be installable. All you need is a blank USB stick and an hour or two of free time.
