. Our existing wire shelves gave us some organization, but we knew our closet wasn’t living up to its potential! After living with our current wardrobe for a few years, we decided to install the IKEA PAX wardrobe system. Finally, our wardrobe is organized, functional and beautiful! Turning A Spare Room Into A Dressing Room Or Walk In Closet On A Budget

I get it: building your dream wardrobe from scratch is not only scary, but incredibly expensive! Custom cabinets require a professional designer and can cost money

When Hunter and I decided to redo our closet, I knew right away that we would be using the IKEA PAX system. My parents had them in the previous house, so I knew I would love the way they looked and worked. Most importantly, the quality is really great (IKEA though!).

Before you start building your wardrobe with these IKEA PAX wardrobe ideas, you’ll want to accurately measure your space first. IKEA has a useful online design tool that allows you to create a wardrobe and order products directly from your design. Just enter your closet measurements and start designing!

You start by selecting boxes. They come in two depths: 13 3/4″ and 22 7/8″, as well as three lengths: 19 5/8″, 29 1/2″ and 39 3/8″. Our master closet is 2 feet deep and it has 2 sliding doors. bar. Hunter and I quickly realized that if we wanted drawers, 22 7/8″ frames wouldn’t work. We started the design with 13 3/4″ frames, but quickly realized that the clothes rail wouldn’t technically fit.

This is where the IKEA hacks come in: we just drilled our holes and made it! Our clothes were out of frame, but we knew it wouldn’t be a problem in our closet. If you want to see what the clothes rail looks like in the PAX planner, you’ll need to design it with 22 7/8″ deep frames. Don’t forget to replace them with 13 3/4″ deep frames in your cart when you’re ready to order!

Now for the fun part: shelves, drawers and internal organizations! When you start planning your closet, think about your current problem areas and how you can make them functional. First, think about the items you use the most and put them front and center. Consider installing tall shelves for off-season products. Would a few extra drawers free up space and show unwanted accessories or clothing? It can be helpful to make a list of things to keep. Set shelves, drawers and clothes rails to list items as you design.

The total cost of the IKEA PAX system was $810.00 before tax and shipping. Not bad for a fully customized wardrobe!

Everyone knows the headache of assembling IKEA furniture! That said, the PAX system was actually one of the easiest parts I’ve built. One of the major hurdles we had to overcome was delivery. Most of our products didn’t ship to Charleston, so we sent them to my parents in Atlanta. If you live outside the delivery area, you may need to pick it up from a nearby store or have a willing friend or family member pick it up. Packing our SUV with 27 IKEA boxes was a bit of a joke, but it all fit and we got home safely!

Surprisingly, designing and installing the IKEA PAX system is definitely a two-person job (go to my Instagram page here to see how we installed PAX). There are frame boxes

. Hunter and I only had one hiccup in the whole process. One of the shelf brackets was a little misaligned out of the box, so I ended up cracking the side of the frame by hammering a nail into the back. It doesn’t matter because it’s covered with a shelf! The only advice for assembling IKEA furniture is to double-check the instructions and take your time to avoid such mishaps.

After installing the frameworks, we installed all internal managers. First, we put a divider panel on the side of my closet. I love this item because it gives you more storage, but still allows you to hang larger pieces like dresses and jumpsuits.

Next, we installed the clothes rails. As I mentioned, the clothes rails are technically “made” IKEA with 22 7/8″ deep frames. So the entire length of the hanger fits into the depth of the frame. 4″ frames, that’s how we carved the IKEA. !First, we raised the rail with some pegs to determine the best height. Then we put the rail a few centimeters behind the pre-drilled holes. Easy!

After the clothes rails we placed drawers, shelves, shoe racks, which fit easily into the frames. We also added a multi-functional sliding hook on both ends of the cabinet. I hang my wallet in my bag while Hunter hangs his belts and ties.

Although this is a before photo below, it is definitely not a before photo because this room never existed before! We added a ceiling/floor to the two-story space and made it our own closet. (Music room downstairs). The idea came when we framed the story space as an extra room and some followers suggested turning it into a closet. At first I thought it was crazy because it’s the size of our bedroom! But in the end, we were completely sold on the idea – WHY NOT MAKE IT IN OUR SQUARE?! And we never looked back.

The basis of our wardrobe is the Ikea PAX system. So this is another Ikea Pax Hack (!!) and the 3rd time using their wardrobes. (You can see our last cabinet here, where we kept them relatively unboxed. Other than a few pieces of crown molding and filler.) Now we decided to strip, cut, paint, and add drawer fronts to our cabinet. and material and some other interesting information.

We’ve carefully gone through the process step-by-step, so if you missed the wardrobe part, check out these posts (all sources listed below!)

We also made a short video of how the cabinet comes together from scratch (including the ceiling in the music room!). The sight is surreal. It was a very big project, but it was worth it.

But back to the closet, I tried to put together some before and after photos to see how the space has changed. I also put all of our clothes in there (I think it would have looked better in the photos if I had taken out some colorful tops, but I wanted it to really reflect how they look and work on us.

Our Small Master Ikea Closet Reveal!

Chris and I built the sides of our closet. She mostly chose drawers and I chose optimal hanging space, including all the space for a “jeans stick” so I could see the character of my jeans while they were hanging. Fun fact: I usually decide which jeans to wear before the dress!

The curtains were the finishing touch to the room and really finished it off. I sent the fabric (link below) to Martha and Ash to make and now I want to incorporate it into every room in the house. This is the perfect place
