What do you do when you run out of space in the bedroom? Many of us have very small bedrooms, and once the wardrobes and chests of drawers are moved, there is no room to move around the bed. Luckily, there are plenty of clever ways to make the most of your space, and we’ve rounded up the best of them here. The small bedroom was a challenge for designers Ashlyn Oli and Sophie. “The bed was the starting point,” says Ashlyn. “Swapped the old one for a MALM footstool – the base lifts up to reveal double the size of hidden storage!”
A Small, Budget Friendly Studio Apartment
“It’s tucked away in a recess behind the door, so the wardrobe with the door open wasn’t practical. Instead, I took inspiration from a clothes rail and added an open clothes storage system, drawers and a high shelf to store rare items – What do you use? says Ashlyn.
Ignoring the fireplace, Ashlyn worked vintage and made it the focal point. Using the display as a shelf, she added some simple decorations to keep the area tidy.
This multi-functional mirror has three aces up its sleeve: a well-placed mirror makes a small room feel larger, hanging pegs and a shelf create storage and display space, and a bright color hides a plain wall.
Seamless and modular, the wardrobe can adapt to your space over time. “I replaced a large chest of drawers with Sophie’s open wardrobe system. It’s easy to expand by adding another cabinet, so it can grow with you even as you move from house to house,” says Ashlyn.
The Wardrobe That Opens Up The Room
Create a gallery wall with mixed picture frames – paint them the same color as the walls to make the pictures inside stand out. “Many people have family photos that are put away and often forgotten. I love digging up memories that need to be displayed and celebrated,” says Ashlyn.
“Personalize your solutions – Sophie and Oli were struggling with a lack of floor space so that was a priority. Consider adapting your furniture to save space. “As a fashion designer, you become a storyteller. Looking at the collections or memorabilia of these people and combining them together, a story about space – it’s a unique feeling. What tells your story? And color really makes makeup. Together. A bedroom is not needed. Smalls always switch to a white color palette to make it look bigger – dark lighting is a great combination. “
