Before trying to diagnose Afib on an EKG, it’s helpful to remember what Afib actually is. (But if you’re confident in your knowledge of Afib, skip to the next section for visual examples of Afib EKGs).
For starters, do you remember how your heart was beating? It produces an electrical signal that causes the heart to contract and relax, which pumps blood to the lungs for oxygen and then to the rest of the body.
Your heart sends this electrical signal out of the “sinus node” to create a normal heartbeat. This electrical signal then travels from the heart’s upper chambers, or atria, to the heart’s lower chambers, or ventricles. In Afib, however, a malfunction in your heart’s electrical system causes the atria to beat so fast that they go into shock, or “fibrillation.” This causes the ventricles to become out of sync. Fib or A-fib can be dangerous because it increases the risk of stroke and heart failure. Normally, the atria and ventricles work together so the heart pumps blood at a constant rate. But they don’t do that in Afib. These irregular beats can cause a heart rate of 100-175 beats per minute instead of 60-100 beats per minute.
