I had to learn the hard way how important it is to have a game plan when decorating shelves. I looked at the empty shelves in our first home, which I shared on my blog (it was called at the time and I didn’t know anything about decorating), and I had a terrible feeling that I didn’t know where to turn. I would be close to tears. even start.

I Added Bookshelves To Our Dining Room

Decorating shelves can seem like a daunting task and you won’t know where to start! At least that’s how I felt when I tried to decorate our shelves. I often find myself crying while trying to figure out how to decorate shelves without taking the time to find the right balance.

However, over the years I have always perfected the method I use to decorate my shelves and I promise you that if you try this the next time you decorate, the end result will be perfectly decorated shelves every time!

My way of organizing my shelves is to organize the things I use. I plan to decorate our shelves with items from our house in three different ways, but I will use the same placement method to show you how easy it is to apply in your own home.

Always start on the top shelf and work your way down. From the top shelf, install a trim from one end of the shelf to the other, covering most of the shelf.

A key component of designer quality shelving is the placement of home furniture at different heights. For example, look at the image below. On the top shelf, I didn’t just layer the decor from one edge to the other, I made sure to use the decor along the height.

Some ideas for taller objects include plants such as snake plants that can grow very tall, large paintings placed vertically or horizontally, and large decorative items or candle holders.

You want to make sure you add items that are large enough so that your shelf doesn’t look cluttered. Your ultimate goal is to make your bookcase or shelf look thoughtful and thoughtful, not filled with all the pretty things you have.

After attaching the top shelf, you can move on to the shelf below it. On this shelf, instead of spreading our decor along the entire length of the shelf, we divided it into two sections.

Plant Shelf Ideas That Are Perfectly Styled

When I’m done, I like to step back and take pictures to see if there’s anything I need to add or take away.

Taking pictures, or at least looking at the camera, can really help you notice what you don’t have.

Below, I’ve shared a minimalist look with very little decor, but similarly grouping the decor on each shelf.

If your style is more rustic, just use more rustic décor and less boho or mid-century pieces.

If your style is more modern, you will use less embellishments, mostly large items and very few small ones.

I knew these shelves would look great on this wall. I love how they add height and symmetry to this room. What I had on this wall before really cluttered the space and looked a little chaotic, but these shelves really add a sense of cohesion and calmness, which makes me very happy.

I decorated the shelves with my usual coastal décor and intentionally made the décor on the shelves very even and solid. They are very similar to each other.

For example, each top shelf has my grandmother’s straw hats, the middle shelf has a picture of the coast, and the bottom shelf has a wire basket and a large glass jar.

I have had these bookshelves for a long time. They were left to us by my mother-in-law. These shelves were once wooden, but I painted them white. I also added the numbers 1 and 2 to them. These numbers were once our old house numbers that we exchanged.

The bookshelves really fit this wall perfectly and I’m surprised I didn’t think of moving them here sooner. I also like how they mimic two corner cabins in a room.

Between two bookshelves I have a tall wicker object with a faux lemon tree inside. The wicker part belonged to my grandmother, so I think of it, and the lemon tree is from Balsam Hill a few years ago.

On the middle shelf is an antique ship, a large glass bottle and a piece of wood. And on the bottom shelf is a wire basket with tablecloths and a glass vessel for drinking. Many of these items can be found at flea markets, thrift stores and/or yard sales.

Solved: The Shelving Snafu

Now shelf #2 has my grandmother’s straw hats on the top shelf and a few white squares. The jugs used to be different colors, but I painted them white to make them look like ironstone.

On the middle shelf is a lighthouse painting by my husband’s grandfather and a large seashell that also belonged to my husband’s grandparents. The sink sits on a silver metal fish tray. On the bottom shelf is a wire basket full of blue glass bottles I’ve collected, and another glass drinking vessel in which we keep wine cork souvenirs.

It is interesting that there are memories of her husband on these shelves
