And his love for building never stopped. After seeing a need for high-quality American-made kitchen cabinets and accessories, he launched Heirloom Products®. Berkey PF-2 Fluoride and Arsenic Reducing Filters are attached to the bottom of black Berkey® elements and hang inside the bottom chamber of your Berkey system, removing even more harmful chemicals like arsenic and fluoride.
The number of PF-2™ fluoride and arsenic filters in the lower chamber should match the number of Black Berkey® elements in the upper chamber; For example, 4 Black Berkey® elements require 4 PF-2™ filters for fluoride and arsenic.
Berkey PF-2™ Fluoride and Arsenic Filters work in conjunction with Black Berkey® Elements as they fit over Black Berkey® Elements while Gravity Filters are located in the lower chamber of the unit as shown. They fit all Berkey systems except the Go Berkey Kit.
The fluoride test was based on 20-30 ppm of the ion in the incoming aqueous solution at a flow rate no greater than 3 GPM (11 LPM) per cubic foot of medium. Results of 95% reduction). Under optimal conditions, contaminants below 50 ppb were easily reached (>99.75% reduction). This product uniquely targets arsenic oxide anions and the entire family of arsenic cations.

Our original tests were conducted using only gravity to purify the PF-2 filter. We have since added a stage that uses purge buttons which are much more effective at removing residual process dust from PF-2 media. The test does not distinguish between activated aluminum (Al2O3) and aluminum (Al). Therefore, we had to use the total amount of aluminum and activated aluminum oxide in our tests.
PF-2 filters contain high quality activated aluminum oxide (Al2O3), currently the most effective means available for removing fluoride from water. Activated aluminum oxide is irreversible. Below are the results we obtained when testing the PF-2 filter (water has not previously been filtered through Black Berkey® filter elements). This reduction occurs over time as excess residual powder is washed out of the PF-2 filter as the system is used. We include test results of a national brand of toothpaste and water boiled in an aluminum pot to provide a scale for comparison purposes.
While the above results show that the residual process powder adds a small amount of activated alumina to the water, the Black Berkey® elements reduce the aluminum from the water. We tested water that naturally contained 0.320ppm of aluminum and filtered it through a combination of Black Berkey® elements and PF-2 post-conditioned filter elements (5 cycles). The results showed a marked reduction in aluminum contamination (raw influent: 0.320ppm – effluent after passing through Black Berkey® elements and PF-2 filter: 0.232ppm). Again, standard tests cannot distinguish aluminum (Al) from activated aluminum oxide (Al2O3), which is inert. Despite this, tests have shown a clear reduction using Black Berkey® elements in combination with native aluminum from PF-2 elements as well as any residual activated alumina (Al2O3) process powder.
In other words, the Black Berkey® elements removed more aluminum from the water than was added to the Berkey PF-2™ filters and arsenic.
Berkey Water Filter Quick Start Guide: Assembly, Set Up & Installation
Under normal circumstances, it is recommended to replace two PF-2 filters approx. 1000 gallons – 3,785 litres. For example, the Royal Berkey system is approximately 3.25 gallons, so PF-2 filters must be replaced after (1000 gallons/3.25) or 307 fills. If the system is charged approximately once a day, the Berkey PF-2™ filter and arsenic should be replaced after 12 months, if the system is charged approximately twice a day, the PF-2 should be replaced every 6 months. Actual capacity depends on the presence of other competing pollutants in the source water. High levels of fluoride, arsenic and heavy metals can reduce element capacity and efficiency.

If you haven’t seen one of my other posts about my Berkey water filter, I’ve done a full review on it and why we chose it for our family, and showed you how to clean your filters.
If you’ve seen those posts, you’ve probably heard me talk about the Berkey Red Dye Test. This test is done to make sure the filters are still working as they should and filter everything out of the water.
Berkey Water Filter Review (go Berkey Vs. Travel Berkey)
Berkey black filter elements will filter out artificial red color. This is a good test if you’ve had the filters for a while or to see if the filters are damaged or compromised in any way.
One of my kids dropped a Berkey once and I thought one of the filters had gone bad, but I didn’t know it. I did this test to make sure everything was fine, but I found a red color in the filtered water.
One of my filters broke from the fall, but the crack itself was invisible! I wouldn’t have known my filters weren’t working as they should if I hadn’t taken the Berkey Red dye test.
Now, if you are new to natural living and want to know the importance of water filtration, this is why we do it.

Your Berkey water filter should be changed every 3,000 gallons per filter or 6,000 gallons for two filters. With normal use it will last about 3 years.
You should also replace the filters if they are possibly damaged. To find out if they’re damaged before they turn three, try this red paint test.
Honestly, I was amazed at the results. One seems to work perfectly while the other doesn’t.
Berkey Big Water Filter With 2 Black Berkey Filters
We moved this year and along with the kitchen remodel, changed the filter 10 times. So with all that traffic, it probably got corrupted at some point.
I probably should have done this test sooner rather than later to make sure the Berkey was working as it should.
When the red test filtered the water, I quickly noticed the red was going through one of the filters, so I went online and ordered new ones.
The filters only come in pairs, so I will only include three filters. This will allow for faster filtering of the water. Berkey is the self-proclaimed world leader in water purification, and most people who use their products agree; Unlike standard filters, Berkey filters remove bacteria and viruses.
