In a consumer survey, Cox Automotive (the parent company of ) found that potential buyers of electric vehicles have reservations about battery life and battery replacement costs. Of those considering an electric car, 50% believe the average battery life is 100,000 miles or more, and 46% believe the average battery life is 65,000 miles or less.

The amount of data on EV battery life is limited because most EVs on the road are less than 6 years old. Meanwhile, according to some studies, EV battery degradation is inevitable, but not as bad as some might fear.
Recurrent is a company that tracks battery life for electric cars and battery replacement. It takes a lot of insights from nearly a decade old EVs, including the Nissan Leaf and Tesla Model S. The study’s results show that EV batteries have a lot of life left in them.
To provide some certainty about EV battery life and to take care of replacement cost, the federal government requires manufacturers to offer a minimum warranty of 8 years/100,000 miles. Some manufacturers offer even more protection. A new Rivian R1S or Rivian R1T has warranty coverage for 175,000 miles or eight years. Battery replacements are still rare, so updated cost data can be hard to find. In our community of 15,000 electric car drivers, the battery failure rate is only 1.5%. The table below shows the probability of needing to replace the battery, based on our data. Note that the Chevrolet Bolt and Hyundai Kona EV had much higher battery replacement rates due to extensive manufacturer recalls.
As battery prices continue to drop, the price you would pay today is different than the price you would pay next year or 5 years from now. In 2019, the Mack Institute for Innovation Management at the Wharton School of Business gathered data from academia, news, search engines, industry experts and public statements from manufacturers.
They found a 16% decrease in the cost of battery packs between 2007 and 2019. The authors estimated in 2019 that the average cost of battery packs was $161/kWh. At this estimate, in 2019, the cost of an out-of-warranty 100 kWh battery, which is common in Tesla long-distance vehicles, would be at least $16,100 before labor, taxes, etc. If the downward trend in battery prices remains constant, the price in 2019 should be $6.06/kWh or $56/kWh in 2025.
