Many cats are overweight or obese. A review published in the journal Medicine and Surgery by Catherine Michel and Margie Sherk summarizes the problem and steps to help cats lose weight.

Healthy Adult Cat Guide

Their book begins by addressing the serious health problems caused by overweight and obesity: Obese cats are four times more likely to develop diabetes than normal weight cats, and are more likely to suffer from other problems such as urinary tract infections and senility.

They found that just ten pieces of chewing gum a day is more than a cat needs and can gain 12% of its weight in a year.

How much should a cat weigh? Many owners are not very good at recognizing when their cat is overweight. A typical cat should weigh around 4.5 kg (10 lbs).

Michel and Sherk adapted data from the Pet Obesity Prevention Association to measure cat weight relative to human proportions. For example, a cat that weighs 6.8 kg – about 50% more – equates to 98.9 kg (218 lbs) for a 5’4″ female, or 115.2 kg (254 lbs) for a 5’9″ male.

In addition to using a regular scale, you should also consider the shape of the cat. The waist should look like a belly, and you should feel the cat’s bones.

So what should you do if your cat is overweight or obese? Portion control is obviously part of the solution.

Portion Control for Overweight and Obese Cats Overweight cats should have a regular diet, but overweight cats and cats should be given a special weight loss diet to ensure they are getting enough nutrition. Ask your veterinarian for advice.

Most people use approximate measurements for food, and standard cup sizes or serving sizes are best. When the scientists asked dog owners to measure portions of crabs using a 1-cup food scoop, 2-cup food scoop, or 2-cup liquid container, they found that the amount of food they produced varied very little (Coe et al 2019). Additionally, while 1 in 5 participants had a scale at home that they used for their food, only 1 in 50 used it to measure dog food. However, after seeing their measurement errors, most said they would probably use the scale in the future.

What Is The Ideal Weight For A Cat?

Because cats eat less food than most dogs, they can be affected by insufficient food. Using a bowl or measuring cup that’s not too big, but the right size for the portion you need will help with accuracy. But measuring their food with a scale is the best way to measure cat food.

Keeping a diary of everything your cat eats will help you stick to your plan. Don’t forget to have products designed for dental health as they contain calories.

Michelle and Sherksay You can continue to give cat treats because it makes the cat happy, but to account for the calories in the treat, you need to reduce the amount of cat treats.

Don’t give up on helping your cat, cats need about 60-70% of the calories they need to lose weight. Losing weight below normal has health benefits, so owners of overweight cats shouldn’t despair—they can still make a difference.

It may help to know that weight loss slows down after a while (AAHA 2014). This is normal and does not mean you have failed.

The American Feline Medical Association guidelines provide several recommendations for feeding cats that are appropriate for cats of normal weight and overweight or obese cats. Recommendations on how to feed cats include giving cats regular, small meals, using food toys, and keeping food and water separate.

Average Cat Weight

There is some evidence that cat owners are more likely to be overweight than humans. This comes from a survey of 120 cat owners by German Cat and Bergler (2006). This study looked at cats that did not roam free (ie indoors or had access to an enclosed balcony/garden). A queen weighing less than 4kg or a tom weighing less than 5kg and weighing more than 5kg or 6kg respectively.

Overweight cat owners may say that they have a close relationship with their cat and that it comforts and inspires them. They may also say that the cat is like a child to them. When both owners talk to their cats, overweight cat owners are more likely to talk to their cats about topics related to friends, family, or work.

Owners of overweight cats see their cats eating more, which suggests that food plays a big role in their relationship. Owners of normal weight cats play more with their cats.

Michelle and Sherk concluded that it is important to consider the cat owner when discussing a cat weight loss program.

The value of encouraging other ‘minds’ – things that make people feel good about their interactions with cats, such as playing with toys and a sense of pride in achieving weight loss goals – cannot be understated. Positive feedback from the elderly population (external community) and self-generated is critical to the success of a weight loss program. “Monitor Your Cat’s Weight Michelle and Sherk’s best book is aimed at animals, but it has lots of advice on how to help the general pet.
