How Much Does An Empty Propane Cylinder Weigh – A gallon of propane weighs 4.2 pounds. A “full” 20 lb cylinder should hold 4.7 gallons or propane. Gallons are the most common way to measure. It can also be measured in pounds (one gallon = 4.2 pounds). When measuring in liters, the gauge on the pump is used to determine the amount of propane that has been filled in the tank. When measuring in pounds, you must first know the tare (beginning) of the empty tank.
All propane tanks have a “dead weight” or “TW”. stamped on the tank flange. For a grill-sized tank, you can simply calculate the curb weight + 20 pounds, which is the weight of the tank when it is full. Most 20 lb tanks weigh +/- 17 lbs tare when completely empty. This means that a “full” propane tank should weigh about 37 pounds.

The neck also shows the month and year indicating the production date of the tank. For a 20 lb propane tank, you have 12 years from the date of manufacture before the tank must be recertified with the new date stamped on it. Recertification only adds 5 years before you need to recertify. The cost and inconvenience of recertification almost always exceeds the price of a new tank.

The vent requires a special adapter to allow the introduction of small amounts of propane. The pressure then forces the air out of the one-way vent valve. Scavenging can add another $3-4 to your new tank, although some places don’t charge a fee, especially if you buy a tank from them.
This “20 pound” tank is designed to hold up to 20 pounds of propane. You can gain a pound or two less depending on the temperature of the tank and the air around it when the tank is full. Colder = more propane inside, warmer = less inside. The tank can be another 20% in the tank, but this extra space is designed to expand when the temperature rises.

In very cold winter climates like Canada, there may be more concerns/rules about filling a 20 pound tank. This is because if you leave the tank outside in extreme cold, fill it while the tank is cold, then move it to a warm basement/garage for heating, the gas will expand as the tank heats up. With enough increase in temperature, a sufficient amount of depressurization of the tank will release some of the gas. This is not a problem if the relief value escapes into the outside air.

Refilling 1 Lb Propane Tanks
The ideal time to refill a propane tank is when there are about two pounds of fuel in the tank.
We have provided a guide to tell if the propane is empty for a tank that does not have an indicator. Common ungauge tank sizes are 20lb, 33lb and 100lb.
There are three methods to check how much fuel is left in a propane tank.
1) The first method of determining how full a propane tank is is to weigh the propane cylinder on a scale and subtract the tare weight from the cylinder weight.

Curb weight is defined as the weight of the tank without fuel and is usually indicated in the upper right corner of the tank flange or directly above the tank. Usually denoted by the acronym TW.
2) Another method to check if you need to fill the tank is to look at the gauge of the propane tank.
Most tanks are equipped with a level indicator on the propane tank. When the arrow on the propane tank gauge points to the red area, the tank should be refilled. The smaller tanks we cover in this article (20lb, 33lb and 100lb) do not come with a pressure gauge.
However, you can add a meter to a smaller tank by purchasing it from Home Depot or a similar store.
Ways How To Tell If Your Propane Tank Is Empty
3) The third method to know if the propane tank at home is empty is to use water to estimate how to check the propane level.
You want to pour hot water down the side of the propane tank. Then, put your hand on the outside of the tank. The propane in the tank absorbs heat from the hot water, so the tank will be cool where there is propane.
However, when you reach a level where the propane is low, the tank heats up with hot water.
This is a quick and easy method of estimating how much propane is left in the tank. Note, however, that this method only provides a rough (inaccurate) estimate of the propane level in the tank.

Most propane tanks used for smaller applications, such as grilling, weigh about 20 pounds. However, smaller applications sometimes require a slightly larger tank. These smaller application tanks are usually supplied without a pressure gauge.
These tanks can weigh up to 100 pounds. Following the guide above, here’s how to check the propane level in a 100 lb tank:
The 33-pound tank is usually called a forklift propane tank. They are generally used in construction sites, warehouses or for agricultural purposes.
