How Much Does A Ream Of Paper Weigh In Kg – Paper weight is usually given in two ways – pounds (lb) and grams per square meter (gsm or g/m2). These two figures are calculated slightly differently and give us slightly different information. Here we explain how paper weight is measured.
The measurement of paper weight in pounds comes from America. The number tells you how much 500 sheets of a particular paper would weigh if cut to a standard size. For example, the standard size of watercolor paper is 22″ x 30″, so if you’re looking at a 140-pound sheet, 140 pounds is actually the weight of 500 full-size sheets.

Grams per square meter is easy. As the name of the unit suggests, one square meter refers to how much paper weighs and does not take into account standard sizes. Consequently, we can compare different types of paper by weight if we only look at the weight specified in gsm. Going back to the example comparing our 80lb sheet drawing paper to our 80lb watercolor paper, the difference in weight is obvious seeing as the watercolor paper is 170gsm and the drawing paper is 130gsm.
The ideal paper weight will vary depending on what you want to do. For example, very light papers in the 30-90gsm range require less pressure in embossing processes and are often chosen by printers who do handprints. The lightest paper we have is Awakami Kitakata Washi, only 36gsm and perfect for mokuhanga techniques. 100-200gsm cartridge paper is easier to roll up and take with you from drawing class, but heavier 200-300gsm paper is more durable and can handle heavier media. Watercolor paper weighing 300 – 425 g/m2 is the most popular. It is strong enough for all water-soluble materials and costs less than heavier watercolor papers because less raw material is used to make each sheet. Papers heavier than 425gsm require less stretching before use. 850gsm+ sheets are as stiff as card and when properly primed can be considered a good alternative to a canvas panel for acrylic or oil painting.

How To Read A Paper Ream
The confusing part about weighing paper in pounds is that not all paper types have the same basic size. Although these two sheets are the same size (one square meter), we can see that watercolor paper is actually heavier than drawing paper (130gsm vs. 170gsm).
This chart shows the various papers and their common base sizes and weights. Paper weight does not always reflect quality. It usually reflects the intended use. Watercolor papers are heavy because they must hold a lot of water compared to drawing and sketch papers designed for dry materials.
