Amazon Fire Max 11 Review: An Ok Tablet With Bad Software

After three years, Amazon has finally updated its cheapest tablet: the Fire 7. At $59.99 ($74.99 without block screen ads), the new model is slightly more expensive than its predecessor, but has more RAM and battery life to match the larger and much more expensive Fire HD 10. It will also have USB-C, up to 32GB of onboard storage, and a more powerful processor.

But do these extra features make it a good buy? After trying the ad-free version of the Fire 7 for a month, I’d say yes. If you’re just looking for an affordable entertainment tablet, this is a great device, especially if you’re already integrated into the Amazon ecosystem. Sure, you have to get comfortable with some pretty big changes, like the lower-resolution pixelated screen, but at this price point, no one expects perfection.

Like all Fire tablets, the Fire 7 has a plastic body. Its edges are more curved than the 2019 model, making it easier to hold with one hand. It’s also half an ounce lighter than the 2019 model — 9.9 ounces instead of 10.4 — and is 7.11 inches longer, up from the 2019 model’s 7.55 inches. Slightly narrower bezels and a slightly wider screen make reading and viewing programs easier.

Unfortunately, the new Fire 7 still has a pixelated and grainy seven-inch display and only offers a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution (171 ppi). This was my least favorite thing about the Fire 7. I wouldn’t expect a $59.99 tablet to have a high-resolution display like the iPad, or even the $149.99 Amazon Fire 10. But most people buy this tablet for entertainment like watching movies, reading books and (slowly) browsing social networks. SD card slot. The display easily resists fingerprints and smudges. It is both glossy and matte, making it difficult to use outdoors in sunny weather.

That said, I still enjoy reading e-books and watching shows on the Fire 7. I quickly forgot about the grainy screen, especially at night when I was engrossed in what I was reading or watching. That’s because the Fire 7 runs on the new Fire OS 8, a modified version of Android 11. This new operating system comes with several useful UI changes, such as a dark mode and a setting that reduces blue light. You can also customize the menu a bit.

I especially enjoyed using the tablet for reading. The display is slightly sharper than the Kindle-based e-ink screen, which offers a much lower resolution of 167ppi. If you use tablets as a secondary e-reader, this could be a boon, especially since the Fire 7 is $30 cheaper than the Kindle.

Although the poor speaker produced clear sound that wasn’t full and clear, thanks to the 3.5mm audio jack, I quickly forgot about that too. This is something that is often missing from newer tablets, and combined with Bluetooth support, it allows you to connect it to a wide range of headphones and speakers. Whether you’re listening to audiobooks, tuning in to music, or streaming a show through Audible, it dramatically improves sound quality.

I was impressed with the long battery life. Amazon says it will take about four hours to fully charge the slate with a five-watt charging brick and a USB-C charging cable, which I’ve found to be accurate. The company also claims up to 10 hours of battery life, which is fair in my experience. This puts it at the same price as the Amazon Fire HD 10. I’ve had about a week of recharging the tablet, while the previous version only lasted us two days. To illustrate how good the battery is, watching a 25-minute documentary drains the battery by about 5 percent (at 70 percent brightness, I might add). By comparison, my colleague Cameron Faulkner noticed that the latest model’s battery life dropped by 20 percent while watching a 23-minute episode.

The storage options are also better this time around. While it still only has 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, the new model supports microSD cards up to 1TB. Its previous version had a capacity of 512GB.

The Fire 7 has a microSD slot and can use up to a 1TB card to expand the 32GB or 64GB internal storage.

You can’t expect a $59.99 tablet to be as fast as an iPad, and it certainly isn’t. However, while the Fire 7 is slower, it’s at least a bit faster than its predecessor. That’s because it has a nearly twice as powerful 2.0GHz quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM instead of the 1GB found in the 2019 model. It has the same processor and memory as the $89.99 Fire HD 8. It still doesn’t make it great for gaming, but you can have multiple web pages open at the same time, shall we say a significant drop in tablet speed, which sometimes happens with the 2019 model. I also noticed some improvement in video playback, making it watchable again.

The hundredth time is good. Typing, opening apps, and browsing the web are still relatively slow for someone like me who’s used to iPad speeds, but that just means you’ll have to be patient for a few seconds—no big deal.

However, that was until I added my Gmail account to the built-in email app. After that, navigating the software and launching apps became noticeably slower and never got back up to speed, especially after downloading about seven apps, including Netflix. At least video playback is still good.

The quality of video calls is another story. Even before I linked my Gmail account to the email app, video call quality was poor: calls would lag and sometimes freeze, so I often had to turn off my video. It also didn’t help that the Fire HD 7’s cameras were still bad. Amazon hasn’t updated the 2-megapixel front and rear cameras, so photos, selfies and video chats via zoom look grainy with low color saturation, and I couldn’t see myself indoors in low light.

If you’re deeply immersed in the Amazon ecosystem and, say, a Prime member or own an Alexa smart speaker, the Fire 7 (like other Amazon tablets) offers great value for money. It can run Alexa – I was able to use it to turn my smart lights on and off with just my voice without issue. I, like most people, pay $139 a year for an Amazon Prime membership, which gives me free access to TV shows.

, movies, books for Kindle through Prime Reads and Amazon’s ad-free Prime Music service. The selection of free books and music is very limited, but I still managed to find something I liked.

How To Limit Screen Time On An Amazon Fire Tablet

The Fire 7 is also a decent device if you want to keep your kids occupied on long car rides or plane rides. It’s cheap and comes with parental control options when you create a child’s profile. You can filter what your child can see and set time limits through Amazon’s parental control panel, which you can access from your tablet, smartphone or computer.

Amazon also sells the $109.99 Fire 7 Kids Edition tablet, which comes with a sturdy case with a built-in stand, a two-year damage prevention plan, and one year of Amazon Kids Plus, the kids’ version of Amazon Prime with a curated selection of books, games and videos. Kids Plus is $4.99 a month for Prime members, so if you’re considering a Fire 7 for a toddler who might break it, or if you’re interested in Kids Plus, the Kids Edition, though I haven’t tried it, might be a better option.

While the Fire 7 is great for consuming Amazon content, I was disappointed with Amazon’s App Store offerings. The choice is still huge – you can download many popular apps and games, including Netflix, Hulu, Instagram, Spotify, and Amazon’s subscription game service Luna. However, you still can’t download Google apps like YouTube, Google Drive or Play Store. You can download Google apps from the other side, but it’s a relatively complicated process with security concerns. Also, while you can download Microsoft Office apps, many popular work and productivity apps like Slack, AirTable, and Asana are nowhere to be found, and using Microsoft Word to actually type a document is too slow. Don’t buy it expecting anything other than a fun car.
