As with most things in nutrition, the answer is not black and white.

Tracking what you eat is actually a very useful tool. It doesn’t have to be something you do forever—tracking for a few days can be an eye-opening experience. When you log what you eat, you’ll know where most of your calories are coming from. That way, you can see if it’s really worth it to you.

If pen and paper isn’t your style, use an app. I like the “Lose It” program (as opposed to “My Fitness Pal”) because it has less food, which means no confusion when choosing chicken.

How to determine the right amount of calories for yourself? I honestly know that the app’s algorithms and calculations based on your height, weight and gender are very inaccurate – because they don’t take your metabolism into account!

This is where tracking your food comes in handy. I recommend recording your normal diet for 3-5 days (no limit!), then reduce 100-250 calories from the average. That way, your new calorie goals will be in line with your metabolism and will be achievable in the long term (this doesn’t mean following a 1200-calorie-a-day diet, then returning to “normal” eating habits and then regaining the weight. Come back, right? )

Note that I said eliminate, not reduce! I don’t think a ban will help your overall goals.

What are starchy carbohydrates? Starches include grains such as bread, rice, pasta and quinoa, as well as starchy vegetables such as beans, peas, corn and potatoes.

A typical starchy serving is 120 calories and is equivalent to a thick slice of bread, 1/2 cup of cooked rice, quinoa or beans, or 1 cup of a starchy vegetable such as corn.

The best way to reduce starch content is to use alternatives that have the same texture. A medium roasted potato contains about 30 grams of starch. A medium sweet potato contains only about 8 grams. Once you make this change, you can still include potatoes in your diet.

Instead of bread, get a veggie burger wrapped in lettuce. So, you can still make your favorite snacks with a few tricks to achieve your goals.

When you start counting calories, pay attention to the number of servings of starch you eat. Can you eat 1 or 2 less meals without feeling deprived? Can you swap out some foods for less starch and still enjoy your favorite dinner?

This is actually the best trick! Carbohydrates are mostly found in starchy vegetables (listed above) and non-starchy vegetables, but you can get more bang for your buck (both financially and in terms of calories) by eating vegetables.

These small changes will help you feel fuller in the long run. Don’t come for lunch an hour after dinner.

This is the hardest. But this is probably the most important! Boredom and emotional eating are the biggest causes of weight gain.

If you are in a certain mood, but not hungry, you should look for activities other than eating. Text a friend to say hi, take a quick walk around the block (or just across the room), or practice slow breathing. It may be difficult, but it definitely becomes easier when you develop your skills.
