This little device will allow you to refill your propane bottles over and over again, saving you money and trips to the hardware store. Well worth the money for this super little device.

This charging adapter is well made and works well. I put the cans in the freezer and filled the 5 little by little, weighed the fresh ones and it was under 2 oz. I think I will have to leave the big tank overnight because it is freezing outside and I only put it in for a short time. Next time I’ll leave it overnight, but if I’m not completely full, it doesn’t really make a difference, you always save a batch.

This adapter does not work as purchased. Inside the adapter was a spring and a ball bearing. This restricted flow decreased from the larger tank to the smaller tank. I opened the small hole and removed the bearing and spring. Now it works fine.

Very well done, but could use some instructions on the application and how to use it. I understand to bleed the pressure from the tank before filling, but most people don’t.

Small propane manufacturers will print “non-refillable” on their cylinders. They want you to spend your money and buy more. Using this simple item will save you a lot of money 💰After before we went camping, we realized that there had to be a better solution to keep the propane than the cylinders that cost a pound for our Coleman stove. After discovering that fifty million steel canisters are thrown away by campers like us every year, and a quarter of a million of them end up in the trash, we decided it was time for a better solution.

Thinking we were doing the environmentally responsible thing, we bought a small brass adapter on eBay and started filling our 1lb propane bottles, only to find out later that doing so made it illegal to carry. According to the Department of Transportation, disposable propane cylinders are not designed to the same specifications as refillable ones, so they cannot be legally transported. Fortunately, we never had an accident while carrying our refilled bottles, but if we did, we could be responsible for any damage and pay a heavy fine.

About a decade later, after Coleman and Bernsomatic refilled propane bottles, only one of them developed a leaky valve after being reused ten times. About halfway up Old Monarch Pass west of Salida, CO, we realized that the propane was leaking from our kitchen box in the back of the Jeep and had to break down to handle a 1 lb. Coleman bottle. The gas wasn’t flowing. not from the small relief valve on the side of the cylinder (sometimes with sudden temperature changes), but from its main valve, which has begun to wear out from repeated use.

This incident was enough to convince me that refilling propane cylinders of one kilo is not a safe option (unless you carry them illegally).

From the DOT website. Refilling DOT 39 cylinders has resulted in at least one fatality (£1 category available)

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you need to fill a disposable Coleman propane cylinder or another kilo (for example, to use in Mr. Buddy’s portable heater during a power outage), the simple process we used works. However, there is a better way, which we will get to later.

Whichever method you use, always remember that propane is a dangerous and flammable gas, so it is very important to do this process carefully and safely. The pictures above show some of the steps we used to fill our disposable one pound Coleman propane bottles.
