Can You Put Vinyl Flooring In Front Of Fireplace – We’ve almost unpacked our moving boxes and most of our new home is still in disrepair, but that’s not stopping us from making our first room.
I fully admit that I was a little scared to lay the entire floor myself. Although we’ve tackled hundreds of DIY projects over the years, building a deck was something I’d never done before, and I was a little nervous to say the least.

How To Install Groutable Vinyl Floor Tile
Obviously, this room still has a lot to sort out. The window needs to be restored, the yellow door needs to be removed and repainted and the fridge needs to be installed. However, we are very happy with the progress so far, especially if you know what this same room looked like a while ago!
Installing vinyl plank flooring is easy, but there are a few things to consider before installing it in your home, and we’re sharing the correct process on how to install vinyl plank flooring and our tips for a professional finish.
When starting any home improvement project, it’s always important to plan everything in as much detail as possible to avoid unexpected problems, and when it comes to designing luxury vinyl plank flooring, it’s no different.
When installing a new floor, the first thing to consider is how much floor space your room needs.
How To Remove Vinyl Flooring
Calculate the floor area of your room and add about 10% for cuts. If you have a rectangular room, the calculation is very simple and you just need to multiply the length by the width of the room.
As always, we made things a little more complicated and decided to put our new luxury vinyl plank flooring in an oddly shaped room, which meant a few more calculations had to be done.
Once you’ve figured out how big your deck is, it’s time for the fun part of choosing your luxury vinyl plank flooring.
LVT (which stands for luxury vinyl tile) flooring is becoming increasingly popular, and it’s easy to see why. There is a wide range of floor coverings to choose from, they are very durable, have a low installation height and are therefore suitable for renovations and are waterproof and perfect for bathrooms and kitchens.
Things You Need To Know Before Buying Vinyl Flooring
We ordered our new floor from Bricoflor who deliver throughout Europe and the UK. They specialize in flooring, carpeting and wallpaper, so it’s worth checking out if you’re undertaking a home improvement project. They have a great selection of floors and I am not exaggerating when I say that deciding on the floor finish was the hardest part of this project.
Fortunately, PricoFloor has a free sample service where you can order up to 8 samples to ensure you choose the perfect floor for your home.
After much consideration, we chose Granorte Solid-Trend hard vinyl flooring in Sea Sand. It has a beautiful soft gray color that is both classic and modern. This vinyl flooring has an inner layer of cork, which is highly durable and provides sound insulation benefits without the need for an additional foundation.
When laying the floor, you should start laying the planks along the longest wall of your room. Also consider the location of your windows and the direction of light. Ideally, light falls along the entire length of the boards.
How To Clean Vinyl Plank Flooring
Finally, consider the direction of any other floor adjacent to the room. Ideally, the boards should run in the same direction as any other flooring to give everything a seamless look.
After deciding which direction to place the boards, you can do some simple calculations to ensure that the boards are even throughout the room and not end up with a thin strip at one end of the room.
A 5 cm long strip at the end of the room is perfectly acceptable, but if your calculations mean that you will end up with a very short strip at one end of the room, cut the first row in half so that you have two boards of approximately the same size at each end of the room.
Don’t forget to check the longboards as well. If we had started with a full wood floor, we would have ended up with a small piece at the other end of the room.

One of the best things about vinyl plank flooring is that you don’t need fancy tools to install it.
Now that all the planning is done, you can finally start laying your floor. Well, sort of. Depending on the condition of your floor, you may need to do some prep work first.
The single most important thing when installing a luxury vinyl plank floor is to make sure your sub-floor is level and as even as possible. Any imperfections will affect the quality of your finished floor and worse, reduce the longevity of the look of the floor as it can loosen the click system over time.

Our sub-floor was very smooth, but the floorboards were slightly bent and the surface was very wavy. We tried to keep the floorboards as level as possible and chose to cover the entire floor with 3mm HDF boards before laying the luxury vinyl plank flooring on top.
Removing the plate is optional, but we recommend it for best results. Alternatively, you can add half-round molding strips to fill the gap between the floor and the baseboard, but removing (and reinstalling) the baseboard gives you a cleaner look.
To decorate the floor in a super stylish way, it is better to place vinyl planks under the door jamb. To do this, cut the wood and hold it against the door frame. Next, using a hacksaw or multi-tool, cut a small section from the bottom of the frame, using the thickness of the board as a guide.
Next, cut a piece of vinyl plank to fit under the door frame. We cut all the details with a jigsaw, but you can easily cut it with a Stanley knife.

As you can see, this is not something we do. The luxury vinyl plank flooring we used has an inner layer of cork so no additional underlay is required.
Whether or not you need a primer depends on the type of flooring you’re using, so check the manufacturer’s instructions before starting your project.
As strange as it may seem, you’ve already done most of the work! Because of all the planning you’ve done, installing flooring will be a breeze.
Starting in the left corner of your room, place the first board with the grooves facing the room. Slide the next pieces to form the first row. It is very important to make sure that the first row is correct so that all subsequent rows will be fine.

Don’t forget to leave space around the room. This is to ensure that the floor expands as it heats up. The best way to leave a flat space is to use the small spaces you put in the wall. They help maintain the proper expansion gap.
When you get to the end of the room, cut the last board so you can put it in the gap. Instead of measuring, turn the board over, push it against the wall, and draw a line where the boards meet.
Mark the line you marked with a Stanley knife and speed square. Be sure to cut it a little shorter, leaving a gap of 4-5 mm around the perimeter of the room.
Then you can cut the board in half along the line. It’s all happening – it really couldn’t be easier!

One of the best things about this type of flooring is how easy it is to install and cut.
Of course, you can use a circular saw or jigsaw to make the cuts, but a Stanley knife works well and is less messy than using a hacksaw. If you’re doing a lot of cutting on boards, you may want to use a power tool, but you don’t have to.
